Angel (1984, USA) Robert Vincent O'Neill
-
has redeeming facet
A major letdown of a film that tries to not be an exploitation
film – YOU ARE REVENGE FILM ABOUT A TEENAGE PROSTITUTE.
09.
Funny Face (1957, USA) Stanley Donen -

a must see
J. Rosenbaum says it best with "The film's sophistication
is compromised by the rather dumb plot..." but the musical numbers are
stellar.
10.
Blast of Silence (1961, USA) Allen Baron -

Excellent
Solid gritty noir that shows the genre transitioning into something
a bit more arthouse.
11.
Boxing Helena (1993, USA) Jennifer Chambers Lynch
-
Masterpiece
Pretty much reviled by everyone? I’m at a loss… There
is so much to be worked out here on both a visual and narrative level. Miss
Lynch was lambasted by a critical world, most whom tend to dislike the edgier
works of Paul Verhoeven, Peter Greenaway, and Ken Russell (this film’s
closest relatives – sorry Dad) so it’s a shame that she took the
blasting so much to heart. With Surveillence in limited circulation
and HISSS in production, I’m ecstatic that she is back behind
the camera. This is a filmmaker I could fall in love with.

Freeway II: Confessions of a Trick Baby (1999,
USA) Matthew Bright -

a must see
Hansel and Gretel with Vincent Gallo as the wicked witch, and
that’s down playing things… This Matthew Bright is something of
an underground auteur, one of those filmmakers that you can just tell have an
unrealized masterpiece in their future.
21.
Splatter: Naked Blood (1995, Japan) Hiyayasu Sato
-

a must see
This movie was waaay ahead of its time. Jeremy over at Movie
Martyr blog has been eating
his stuff up as of late. I'll definitely be exploring more works myself.
22.
Lady in the Lake (1947, USA) Robert Montgomery
-

a must see
Gaspar Noe’s latest was inspired by this so-called hokey
cinematic experiment. I would defend it as a very capable film in its own right
and a very intelligent bit of filmmaking that both inverts and exaggerates a
great many noir themes. Worth seeing if only to suffer the icy gaze of Miss
Adrienne Fromsett.
24.
All Ladies Do It (1992, Italy) Tinto Brass -

worthless
Brass’ movies typically boast some impressive photography
at the very worst. This one misses the mark, even on that front, and plays out
as simply an exercise in classy pornography.
